First Time FAQ

How does it work?

At Rocksports, we have top rope climbing, and bouldering. When you’re top rope climbing, you will be attached to a rope as you climb our walls. For this type of climbing, you will need a partner to hold the rope for you while you climb. We can show you how to do this when you come in. Bouldering is climbing on shorter walls, with mats beneath you to ensure a safe landing when you fall. This can be done alone.

What if I don’t have a partner?

No problem! If you’re looking for someone to climb with, you can make a post on the Friends of Rocksports Valley Facebook group, or try the Brisbane Belay Buddies group – who host regular come-and-try social climbing nights in the gym.

Do I need to make a booking?

Nope! Bookings are only required if you intend on coming to the gym in a group of 8 or more. Otherwise, come on in anytime.

Will I have to complete a waiver form?

Yes – the completion of a waiver form is compulsory for every climber and belayer. If you’re under the age of 18, we require that you have a parent of guardian sign on your behalf. You can even do this online before you come in.

Can any age climb?

Any age is able to climb (we encourage it!) but you must be over the age of 13 to belay (hold the rope for your partner).

What do I wear?

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is best, and closed in footwear is essential! Basically, wear what you would if you were going out for a long walk.

Where can I park?

There is no dedicated parking for Rocksports. The streets adjacent to Rocksports are generally pay parking on weekdays between 8-5pm. After 5pm, or on weekends, you can usually find a park on Agnes or Gotha St. During busier times and work hours, Quarry Street and Love Street are the best options.

Alternatively, we are only a 2 minute walk from the Fortitude Valley train station, and there are lots of bus routes that will drop you a few minutes walk from us.
